Below is a copy of the welcome letter and a quick intro to our art curriculum:
A warm greeting new and returning Schavey Road Families!
I am very excited to be working with your child in the art room this year. I have been the elementary art teacher in DeWitt since 2005 after receiving my art education degree from Michigan State University. My time is split between Scott School in the morning (our 3rd/4th grade building) and Schavey Road Elementary in the afternoon.
My wife Sara and I have two children, Amelia and Gwen. Our favorite destination is Munising, MI, where we spend time every summer. Munising is the site of my favorite painting subject: the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. As a landscape painter, art is an important part of my professional and personal life. It is a pleasure to be able to share my love of art with my students.
Art Room Blog
I would like to invite you to make regular visits the Schavey Road Art Room blog. I will be posting weekly updates showcasing our artistic adventures. You can also browse the student galleries to check out some of our outstanding work from last year. The web address is: schaveyart.weebly.com
Art room wish list
Housekeeping supplies: We could use paper towels, hand-wipes (kid safe - not clorox), sponges, facial tissues, zipper sandwich bags, and brown paper lunch sacks.
Art supplies: we typically use standard Crayola art supplies (washable whenever possible) – markers, crayons, colored pencils, watercolor paints, and of course plenty of paper! We have enough to start the year, but a fresh box of art materials from time to time is always appreciated.
Newsletters
Be on the lookout for monthly updates from the “Specials” teachers - Art, Music, and Physical Education.
Portfolios and student artwork
Students will save most of their finished artwork in the art room throughout the marking period. This practice will allow us to create a “portfolio” of work that will help each student see and celebrate what they are learning in art class. I will send artwork home in packets a few times during the school year – probably once each term.
Thank you, I hope you are looking forward to a great year!

Art Curriculum
Art at Schavey Road
Students have art once a week for 40 minutes.
Our art curriculum has four main elements:
Art Production
Students will have hands on experience exploring new materials, techniques, and ideas.
Art Concepts
Students will be introduced to new vocabulary to help them make sense of the visual arts.
Art Appreciation
Students will experience the visual arts through the eyes of master artists from the past, artists from other cultures, and through the artists sitting next to them in class.
Fun!
Last but not least, students should have a BLAST! I am looking forward to being a part of the simple joy of creation that students experience through the visual arts.
