Students painted a sunset in watercolors by learning to mix paint with just the three primary colors. The next week we added a silhouette of the Mackinac bridge. During this lesson we read a little about the artist Claude Monet. We learned that Monet loved to paint outdoors by mixing colors to capture the beauty of nature. San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk
Painting by Claude Monet Wassily Kandinsky Composition 4, 1911 ![]() Wassily Kandinsky Composition 8, 1923 ![]() Students created these painting while listening to quite music and nature sounds. We looked at the artwork of Wassily Kandinsky, an early pioneer of abstract painting whose work was heavily influenced by music. Students were given the choice of painting in a realistic or abstract style using lines, shapes, and colors.
Model Magic is a modeling material made by Crayola that is perfect for young hands to mold and sculpt into small characters. It is sold in bright colors, air dries to a light Styrofoam consistency, and can be modeled easily with no mess. I paint on a layer of Mod Podge to the top and sides (not the bottom) of the dried and finished sculptures. This is quite a bit of extra work, but the finished products have a nice glossy sheen and a sturdier construction. They still break of course, but a little glue will fix them easily Many of the sculptures I have in my home and classroom have been around for years with a few mends here and there!
If you are looking for a fun art activity to do at home, I would highly recommend a pack of model magic! (Did I mention no mess!? ) |
