This week I decided we needed an art room "catch up" day. Students worked to get caught up on unfinished projects we have saved throughout the marking period. Early finishers were given some time to create art independently. i enjoyed watching many of the students making drawings or paintings using the skills they have learned thus far in art class.

This week students are adding color and patriotic designs to their Veterans Day Soldier Portraits. I have been trying a few different kinds of background designs using paint, stickers, flags, stars, and fireworks! I really like how the fireworks give a splash of color and a sense of celebration to the artworks. The stickers are a lot of fun, too. I always remind the students to avoid going "Sticker CRAZY!" - and they seem to know what I mean. Most of the time :)
Would you like to own your very own original painting from Mr. Jaruzel?! I just dropped off this painting for donation to the DeWitt Elementary PTA's Denim & Diamonds silent auction. It is painted with acrylics on an 18x18 inch birch panel. The deep edges allow for the painting to be hung up with or without a frame. Painting the landscape is one of my passions, and I periodically show my work in gallery shows around the greater Lansing area. This piece is part of my Tree Series from 2013. In this series I want to explore the endless colors, textures, and designs that surround us in nature.
Tickets and info on the auction can be found at the PTA Website: http://www.ptadewitt.org/ Veterans day is coming up on November 11th. First and Second graders are learning that art can be a great way to honor and remember important people and events in our lives. Their soldiers are off to a great start!
