Every year students use their art time to create a special work of art to send home with the PTA's Original Works Fundraiser. The Original Works program is an art-based fundraiser that gives families the opportunity to transform their child's artwork into unique and treasured gift items. There are several great benefits from this lesson: 1)The funds raised support out awesome DeWitt Elementary PTA, and 2) First grad students have the opportunity work like artists to prepare, create, and present original works of art. First grade projects have a great variety of subjects. I provided a few ideas to practice and get students thinking, but they had to plan out their own project through sketching and working their way to a final drawing. You may see pets, houses, or dragons, depending on what inspired the artist. Look for the pictures to be sent home with an order form from the PTA in mid October. Kindergarten classes are finishing a unit focusing on how artists combine shapes into drawings. Our first objective was to create a fish using crayons and watercolor paint. In the process, students became familiar with a variety of drawing resources in the art room. These resources give students practice with identifying, combining, and creatively utilizing shapes and lines in their drawings. "How to draw" directions require focused attention to differences that students must mimic in their work. These exercises are both a part of guided instruction as well as an ideal way for students to freely choose their own adventure and challenge level in the art room.
![]() What do you do when you are having trouble? Give up? Don’t even try? That was Vashti in the art room at the beginning of “the dot”. By the end, Vashti found the confidence she needed to be a truly creative artist. Students created their own colorful paintings after hearing “the dot”, by Peter Reynolds. I hope they will help us remember some of the messages from the book: anyone can be an artist and NEVER GIVE UP! |
