So, to make a long story short... I tested out some different types of hats and scarves for a few classes, but not for all. If you happen to be inspired to create some crafty accessories to your penguin, please do so! Be sure to send me a picture and any good ideas you come up with.
Wow, this has been a busy week, but the penguins are turning out to be super cute! Without a kiln to harden and fuse the clay, I spend quite a few hours gluing together broken pieces on a project like this. After the kids paint their penguins, I go through and add a coat of Mod Podge as a sealer and varnish to protect and solidify the finished forms. A few students used extra clay to add hats, hair, or accessories to their penguins (including and ART and Santa penguin!). I talked to some classes about adding hats and/or scarves to their penguins after they were finished. I am sure their are some great ideas on how to add accessories. The scarves I made are really simple... just red yarn or curly ribbon tied on. The Santa hats I made are done with red and white Crayola Model Magic. My inner art teacher is telling me to "Put those cute hats and scarves on all the penguins!" The problems with this are 1) even though you do not need much, I can't buy enough model magic or scuply clay to make hats for 400+ penguins, and 2) I just don't have time to add these fun finishing touches to all classes (especially in one week!)

Finally! Not a week goes by without someone asking THE question: "Are we doing clay today?!" Well, my answer can finally be "Yes!" By the end of the week the art roomed will be filled with 400 clay penguins :) We do not have a kiln, so I use a natural air-drying clay that will be painted and varnished. The finished forms will be hardened but not fused like traditionally fired ceramic pieces. Penguins are a great for learning to sculpt with three basic clay forms: a ball, slab, and coil.
