Every year students use their art time to create a special work of art to send home with the PTA's Original Works Fundraiser. The Original Works program is an art-based fundraiser that gives families the opportunity to transform their child's artwork into unique and treasured gift items. I see two great benefits of this lesson: 1)The funds raised support out awesome DeWitt Elementary PTA, and 2) Students have the opportunity work like artists to prepare, create, and present truly original works of art. Students spent day one SKETCHING: planning their ideas and practicing their work. The next few weeks will be spent guiding learners through creating a finished piece of work, revising, and adding finishing touches.

Today - September 15ish - is International Dot Day! Schavey Road celebrated the dot over the past two weeks. Our colorful and creative dots remind us to work hard and NOT GIVE UP when we have to do something difficult. Though historically I may be considered a glitter GRINCH, I made an exception for this project by mixing up some glittery gold mod podge to give our frames some sparkle. I blame the influence of Ms. Chapin for softening my no-glitter stance.
We decided to waste no time in jumping into a painting on the first day of art class! Fun! "The Dot", by Peter Reynolds, provided an inspirational first day of art message. Up next: frames in "swirly gold!" What do you do when you are asked to do a difficult thing?
Give up? Don’t even try? That was Vashti in the art room at the beginning of “the dot”. By the end, Vashti found the courage and confidence she needed to be a truly creative artist. How did she do it? Who helped her? Her art teacher gave her great advice - have the courage to TRY! “Make a mark, and see where it takes you.” Her art teacher believed that what she made was special. She encouraged Vashti to sign her artwork like an artist, and seeing her artwork in a fancy frame inspired Vashti to keep exploring her Dot-themed-Art! Vashti gained confidence and skills by showing courage, being curious, and working hard on her creations. How did Vashti pass on what she learned? At the end of the story, Vashti shows a not-so-confident little boy that she thinks his artwork is special, too! Maybe he will be inspired to create just like Vashti... |
