Henri Matisse Still Life: Apples on a Pink Tablecloth 1922 Nation Gallery of Art, Wash D.C. Students are using their knowledge of color to create these beautiful still life paintings inspired by Henri Matisse. Matisse is best known for the freedom he enjoyed with color and pattern in his works. Looking at his paintings shows a practical application of the art vocabulary we have been working with. This project was broken into two sessions: one to paint an empty table and background space, and a second to add still life objects.

Schavey Road artists will be exploring the wonders of mixing colors. My poster calls it magic, but we know it is a science and and art! Students will experiment with mixing colors from the three main color families:: primary, secondary, and intermediate (tertiary) colors.
This week has been all about how to deal with our mistakes in art. Should we crumple up our paper, toss up our hands, and quit?! I hope not! Students are learning a valuable lesson that our mistakes can actually be unique opportunities that can lead to exciting new ideas. Bent paper? Tears or cuts in the wrong place? Try turning them into something new. The message of our posters is simple: In art... It's not a mistake, it's an opportunity! Our lesson is based off a wonderfully simple book called Beautiful Oops.
