Our next project at Schavey will focus heavily on two elements of art: texture and space. The first step involves setting up a distant space by drawing a horizon and hills near the mid-point of the paper. Students were then asked to fill the landscape with a "fluffy" snow texture using large and small brushes. We will be adding more elements to the pictures once the empty white space dries. Students are learning to spot all of the art elements in pictures: line, shape, color, texture, value, form, and space. Claude Monet, Entering the Village of Vetheuil in Winter, 1879

We are wrapping up our series of animal-themed projects by making paper animal masks. These masks continue to build on our cutting, drawing and creative art skills. This project is extra fun because kids naturally transition into using these masks for creative play - and transforming themselves into wild animals! Very exciting! .
We are starting off the new year by continuing our exploration of animals in art - this time through drawings. Students are gaining fine motor and drawing skills as they have been working to draw, outline, color, and cut out their animal characters. These cutouts are being added to a colorful border of rain forest leaves created with oil pastels and paint. Student were encouraged to use a variety of colors and patterns to enhance their work. I have been very impressed with the results!
