En Plein Air! In We have been taking advantage of this lovely weather to head outside to make nature sketches. This ties in perfectly to our reading about Claude Monet and the Impressionists, who routinely made sketches and paintings on location.

What color is the sky?! Our next project will challenge students to create their own "sky color". We will use these colorful skies as backgrounds for a silhouette to give their scene a sense of place. The premise of the lesson starts with a book with the same name: Sky Color, by Peter Reynolds (who also wrote the DOT from earlier in the year). Marisol, the young artist in the book, learns to think beyond the color blue for the sky she is painting. She realizes that nature provides more than enough variety, especially when combined with the creativity of the artist! We are also making a connection to Mr. Jaruzel's FAVORITE master artist - Claude Monet. Like Marisol, Monet and the Impressionists were inspired by nature, often traveling outdoors to create their paintings directly. Students are being asked to use impressionist techniques, such as creating a mixture of colors using small brush marks that are inspired by the incredible variety of the land, sky, and water.
